The Beauty of Spiritual Disciplines
There was a time when I viewed spiritual disciplines almost like duties on a checklist. Pray. Read the Bible. Worship. Fast. Spend quiet time with God. Tick the boxes and move on. But over the years, I have come to realize something beautiful: spiritual disciplines were never meant to be lifeless religious routines. They are invitations into a relationship. God has never been interested in mechanical Christianity. He has always desired communion with His people.
Prayer is not about saying enough words to impress heaven. It is opening our hearts to the Father and learning to walk with Him throughout the day. Some prayers are full of passion and faith, while others are whispered through tears or silence. Yet every sincere prayer draws us closer to Him.
Reading Scripture is not merely gathering information. It is sitting before the living Word and allowing Him to shape our hearts. The Bible is not just a book to study; it is a voice that speaks life, correction, encouragement, and truth into our spirit.
Fasting is often misunderstood. It is not spiritual punishment or an attempt to earn God’s favor. It is making room for deeper hunger after Him. When we quiet the demands of the flesh, we become more aware of the things of the Spirit.
Solitude can feel uncomfortable in a noisy world, but there is something deeply healing about stepping away from distractions and simply being still before God. So much of our lives are filled with constant activity, yet many times God speaks most clearly in the quiet places.
And worship—true worship—is far more than singing songs. It is the posture of a surrendered life. Worship lifts our eyes off ourselves and fixes them upon Christ. It reminds us who He is and who we are in Him.
None of these disciplines are about earning love from God. We already have that through Christ. They are simply pathways that help us grow deeper in intimacy with Him. Just as friendships cannot flourish without time and attention, our walk with God deepens as we intentionally make space for Him.
Perhaps the Lord is inviting you into one of these disciplines afresh in this season. Not as a burden, but as an open door into deeper fellowship with Him. And you may discover, as many of us have, that the greatest treasure was never the discipline itself, but the nearness of His presence found within it.
