When God’s Will Seems Unclear

“Your will be done” is a beautiful prayer… but let’s be honest, it’s much easier to say when we feel like we actually know what that will is.

There are seasons, though, when things don’t feel clear at all. No strong sense of direction. No obvious next step. Just a kind of fog. And if we’re honest, that can feel unsettling. We want clarity, and instead we get quiet. We want a map, and we seem to get a mist.

But here’s something steady we can come back to: while God’s specific will for our situation may sometimes feel hidden, His general will is never unclear. It’s been right in front of us all along.

We’re told to love God with all our heart. To love others. To walk humbly. To act justly. To show mercy. To live with integrity. To forgive, to be patient, to bear with one another. None of that is ever foggy. That part of His will is crystal clear.

And I’ve found this over the years—often the breakthrough doesn’t come from chasing the big, dramatic answer, but from quietly walking in what we already know is right. There’s something about faithfulness in the “known” that begins to lift the fog in the “unknown.”

It’s a bit like walking with a lantern rather than a floodlight. You may not see the whole road ahead, but you can see enough for the next step. And as you take that step, a little more light comes. Then another step… and more light.

God is not playing hide and seek with us. He’s not trying to make things difficult or confusing. More often than not, He’s inviting us into a relationship of trust. Not just guidance—but walk with Me, even when you don’t have all the details.

Timing plays a big part here, too. We tend to want answers now, but God often works in seasons. There are times of clarity, and there are times of quiet formation. Both are purposeful. Both are part of His leading.

So if you find yourself in one of those foggy places today, don’t panic. You’re not lost.

Just come back to what you do know. Love well. Walk honestly. Stay soft-hearted. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Do the next right thing in front of you.

And trust this—light comes. It always does.
