The Gift of Today 

You know, it’s so easy to live everywhere except where we actually are.

Our minds drift backward—replaying conversations, revisiting regrets, holding onto moments we wish we could relive or redo. Or we jump ahead—trying to predict, plan, and control a tomorrow that hasn’t even arrived yet. And somewhere in all that, we quietly lose the one thing God has actually placed in our hands… today.

Yesterday is gone. It’s done its work. There may be lessons to carry forward, gratitude to hold onto, even things to put right—but we can’t live there. And tomorrow? It’s not promised. It belongs to God in a way that keeps us dependent on Him, not on our own carefully constructed plans.

But today… this moment… this breath… this is where life happens.

Jesus gently draws us into this way of living when He teaches us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Not a week’s supply. Not a lifetime guarantee. Just enough for today. It’s not limitation—it’s invitation. An invitation to trust. To walk with Him step by step, not sprint ahead anxiously trying to secure our own future.

And if we’re honest, a lot of our anxiety comes from living in a day that hasn’t arrived yet. We borrow trouble from tomorrow and bring it into today, and in doing so, we rob today of its peace. At the same time, if we cling too tightly to yesterday—whether in nostalgia or regret—we can become stuck, unable to move forward into what God is doing now.

But the Kingdom is always present tense.

God is not asking you to live yesterday again, nor is He asking you to solve tomorrow. He’s asking you to walk with Him today.

So what does that look like? It might be something beautifully simple. A conversation you need to have. An act of kindness. Time spent in His presence. A step of obedience you’ve been putting off. Often, the “big will of God” unfolds through small, faithful steps taken in the present moment.

Today is not just another day to get through—it’s a gift. A sacred space where God is at work, where His grace is sufficient, and where His Kingdom can be expressed through your life.

So maybe the question isn’t, “What about yesterday?” or “What if tomorrow?”

Maybe the better question is this:

What is God inviting me into—right now, today?
